representational issues

Les Revenants directed by Fabrice Gobert in 2004. Representation - How a media product presents an element of a narrative with the ideologies of the producer constructing these elements. Representations construct reality. Representations come from hegemonic norms. Representation is the study of... 1.     The group, place or issue on which a media product is focusing. 2.     The media language the media product uses in order to present these groups or issues. 3.     The ideological perspective about the group or issue being created within the product. 4.     The impact of this ideological perspective on the target audience. Horror is very unpopular in France - Working class - Woman - 25-30 - Background looks like a kitchen with the mise-en-scene of the tiles suggesting she has to work to put food on the table - Middle Class - White  - Mother - Woman - Stereotypically Attractive - Middle aged - Middle Class - Wom

les revenants et genre

Les Revenants is a French unconventional horror shown through lack of conventional jump scares. Pleonastic sound - where one instrument surpasses the others in a soundtrack in terms of loudness. This show is an example of genre hybridity. The Returned (French: Les Revenants) is a French supernatural drama television series created by Fabrice Gobert, based on the 2004 French film They Came Back (Les Revenants), directed by Robin Campillo. The series debuted on 26 November 2012 on Canal+ and completed its first season, consisting of eight episodes, on 17 December. In 2013, the first season won an International Emmy for Best Drama Series. Canal+ funded part of I Daniel Blake. Broadcast in the UK on Channel 4 but not developed by them. Internationally distributed by Universal. Experimental (Avant-garde) slow paced drama-zombie show. It is a soap-opera. (family scandal, characters of different ages). It is a cult tv show - A cult following is a group of fans who are highly

Fandoms

Fandom is a subculture composed of fans characterised by a feeling of empathy and camaraderie with others who share a common interest. Examples: - Bronies - Rick and Morty fans - Furrys - Beliebers Textual poaching - Stealing something from a media product and often using it in a way that subverts normality/ the intention of the producer. KEY THEORY 18 - FANDOM - FANDOM Fandom refers to a particularly organised and motivated audience of a certain media producer franchise. 'Fans use the media in ways not intended by the producer' 18 - Fandom - Henry Jenkins  (radio, videogames, television, online media) • Fandom refers to a particularly organised and motivated audience of a certain media producer  franchise • Unlike the generic audience or the classic spectator, fans are active participants in the construction and circulation of textual meanings • Fans appropriate texts and read them in ways that are not fully intended by the media producers (‘textual poach

Regulation

Humans has a cult following whereas other shows may not. Audiences are supposed to talk about it afterwards. These discussions could involve theories, opinion and mysteries within the show. Regulation Regulation is the rules and restrictions that a media product has to follow. Films are regulated with ages restrictions based on swearing and violence. Television has an open audience and media on television is only regulated through the way it is funded and even then this is only a guideline. Swearing cannot be used before the the 9pm watershed but this can be solved by making a 9pm watershed programme available on demand. Livingstone and Lunt criticised the way that media is regulated in the sense that not everything can be easily regulated anymore. Cultivation, normalisation for children. In America, Male and Female masturbation in media is seen as different. Rape scene: preferred reading  - Audience should think its disgusting, disturbing negot

Humans economic factors

Britishness shaped humans because Channel 4 is based in Britain. This is reinforced by the mise-en-scene of Kings Cross Station in London. Choice of lexis in humans makes it British. Style of humans. TV Ugly characters are used to represent normal people. Max is an example of a TV Ugly character. The detective, Pete , in this show is also TV Ugly to represent that he has a normal job. Elderly people in British TV are represented as quite dependable. An example of this is the high-angle mid shot of George looking down at Odey in the supermarket. It is similar to British Sitcoms like outnumbered. Because Channel 4 is funded by advertisements, it needs to tone down violence and swearing. Independent ideology - themes of rebellion, culture, and identity. Has relatively high production values - the money put into making it - making the show look good. Specific target audience: Name : Harry Age : 24 Gender : Male Nationality : British Location : London Sexuality : Stra

Marketing in TV Industry - Humans

Television is a specialised industry. A specialised industry is a distinct market Television in the 21st Century - A fractured industry that relies on digital technology. Binge-watching is now a big thing because of online streaming services like Netflix. Television is now more commercial. From an ideological perspective, BBC was set up to be completely unbiased and was funded by TV licensing. (To inform, educate and to entertain). HBO gets away with the use of nudity and swearing due to having to pay to watch these shows. This allows them to bypass regulation. Big broadcasters are now narrowcasters, with multiple channels targeting different audiences. Audience Fragmentation. Convergence - the coming together of different industries. How did distribution, circulation and marketing shape humans? Humans was distributed using subtle references to the show with fake advertisements that integrated it into real life. This is an example of hyperreality targeting fans of science

television industry tasks

How are events, issues, individuals and social groups in this product represented through the selection and combination of media language?] In Humans, the selection of the mise-en-scene of the high-angle mid-shot of Anita represents the mother-like care that a babysitter or nanny may give to a child. This representation of cyborgs in humans is subversive as they are not meant to have feelings. The high-angle of this shot represents the power of the human audience over the synths (cyborgs) in this shot. However, the representation of women in this scene is being caring and motherly, both from Laura's concern about Anita and Anita's newly learned feeling of love which could reflect the selection of Anita being positioned facing away from the camera showing her focus on learning how to feel a new emotion. How (and why!) have stereotypes in this media product been used both positively and negatively? In Humans the subversive stereotype of Joe's role of a stay-at-home hu

Post modernism

Hyperreality - like reality but beyond reality. Jean Baudrillard Humans and simulacra - representation of something that is not real (synths) - entire series is about how how synths are preferable. Anita is hyperreal. 5 - Postmodernism - Jean Baudrillard  (television, online media) • In postmodern culture the boundaries between the ‘real’ world and the world of the media have collapsed and that it is no longer possible to distinguish between what is reality and what is simulation. In fact, it really doesn't matter which is which! • Therefore, in this postmodern age of simulacra, audiences are constantly bombarded with images which no longer refer to anything ‘real’ • Because of this, we are now in a situation that media images have come to seem more ‘real’ than the reality they supposedly represent. This concept is referred to as 'hyperreality' Key work –  Simulacra and Simulation

Levi-Strauss - Binary oppositions Evaluate this theory referring to humans in your response. (they are useful) Refer to representations, men vs women, key scene, feminist theory, construction. Humans encodes meaning through a system of binary oppositions. For example, there is a Binary opposition between humans and synths (cyborgs) in the beginning of the episode when Laura walks into the house and the close-up of her face emphasises confusion about why the hallway seems clean. The lowkey lighting in this scene also suggests that she is not expecting the family to have a synth. The mid-shot Anita, the synth, greeting Laura is a still shot suggesting that Anita has no emotion towards Laura and she is just programmed to act a certain way whereas the zooming counter-shot into Laura's face represents real emotion. This is a binary opposition between the emotion of both synths and humans because it shows that synths have been created to not feel real emotion. The shot/counter-sh

Humans Analysis - Nov 7th 2018

Anita is a robot that Laura owns. Laura is white whereas Anita is east asian which from an allegorical perspective suggests slavery. Synths are often ethnic minorities. Male gaze theory - women are put in media products to appeal to men which assumes that women are a sexual aspect of a media product to appeal to heterosexual male audiences Anita is a stereotypical housewife. However Laura is not a stereotypical housewife because she works but she seems to get annoyed because Anita has taken her role as a housewife. Laura both conforms and subverts to this stereotype which gives a complex representation of women. Man in brothel shows dominance over Niska because she is meant to not have feelings. Binary opposition created between men and women but also humans and synths. Humans has an ensemble cast. Sidestory = story arc Anita is the main advertising character on posters because according to the male gaze theory sghe is stereotypically attractive. Show lacks a main chara

Construction

Construction Representations - Created by the producer Producer - Creates a media product to get across a specific ideology Producer tries to manipulate the audience with their own ideologies to anchor the audience into thinking about something differently Both the target audience and the group being represented are impacted by representation. In Humans, female synths adopt the role of housewives which contextually links to the mid 1900's when women were seen as lesser than men and they had to do the same jobs. Non-Synth women have subversive roles and Laura works whereas the husband is a stay-at-home dad. Synth women are seen as slaves/unpaid prostitutes. Young Child says 'can we take her back if she's not pretty' - Shows Anita to be a sort of doll. If it was unattractive then it would be breaking hegemonic laws and conventions. Subversive Housewives Stereotypical and at some points sexist. Sexualised Slaves Prostitution Daughter asks for
