Representations - Created by the producer

Producer - Creates a media product to get across a specific ideology

Producer tries to manipulate the audience with their own ideologies to anchor the audience into thinking about something differently

Both the target audience and the group being represented are impacted by representation.

In Humans, female synths adopt the role of housewives which contextually links to the mid 1900's when women were seen as lesser than men and they had to do the same jobs.

Non-Synth women have subversive roles and Laura works whereas the husband is a stay-at-home dad.

Synth women are seen as slaves/unpaid prostitutes.

Young Child says 'can we take her back if she's not pretty' - Shows Anita to be a sort of doll. If it was unattractive then it would be breaking hegemonic laws and conventions.

'synths cannot have emotions'/Brothel scene -

Relationship between humans and synths are a binary opposition as 'non-emotionless synths' care for humans but don't get the same thoughtfulness back.

Women are represented as being motherly, both Laura and Anita care for the youngest girl.

Laura's love is represented through the giving of the teddy bear and anita's is represented through the kiss.

Female bodies are used to clean and be housewives/sexual objects whereas men are seen as more dominant

Preffered response - Good that Anita is caring for the young girl as much as Laura

Negotiated - good that anita is caring but bad that she's taken away

Oppositional - Bad that anita has her own consciousness because others don't know

Niska encoded as being a prostitute with the mise-en-scene of lacy clothing and willingness to do as the man pleases.

Niska staring into camera is a direct mode of address as a kind of plea for help. Made to be uncomfortable. Slow zoom conveys that she is alive.

Adbusters

Deliberately challenged the image. Its childish defacing. This defacing plays on the ideology that nothing is too high up to take down. Banksy Drawing of Policeman snorting cocaine. This is know as detournement. It is a form of high-jacking or re-routing. It is more commonly seen as Culture Jamming. Culture jamming is often obsessed with the idea of destructing consumerism/capitalism. Culture jamming - the practise of criticising and subverting advertising and consumerism in the mass media, by methods such as producing advertisements parodying those of global brands. Adbusters potential genres: Pop Culture - Sans serif font has informal connotations Satirical Comedy - Attacks something. Attitude Online - Wednesday 13th March

Attitude online's primary purpose is to promote the magazine. It has a dedicated readership which may be influenced by the online version of the magazine. Camp - A deliberately tongue in cheek attitude to the world which reinforces a lot of gay stereotypes. Drag shows are very camp to appeal to a gay audience Diva is a gay magazine that is also aimed at women but it is less popular than Attitude. Attitude online is a hyper-sexualised representation of men - most images of these men are topless and often in provocative poses which is surprising in accordance to societal hegemonic norms. An article is critical of lack of representation of different body types which isn't reinforced very well by the singular muscular representation of men which suggests that these images are only being used to make money as they know it plays on the potential desires of homosexual men. Articles are generally focused on grooming, fashion, celebrities and their appearance which suggest
