To what extent do Zoella and Attitude reflect the social and historical context of the time when they were made? In this response, I am going to argue that both Zoella and Attitude and reflect the social and historical context of the time they were made to cultivate ideologies for the audience. The only reason that any media product exists is to make money. Attitude Online - gay male British target audience in 20s and 30s. They are professionals with a high amount of disposable income. They have this disposable income due to the absence of children. The audience are described and being 'early adopters' in the press pack. The press packs sells a pen-portrait of the audience to advertisers. The 'pink pound' is what the advertisers will get. Attitude is horizontally integrated. Wink magazine was bought by Stream Publishing, the owners of Attitude, to minimise competition within that industry. Attitude Online is an example of multimedia integration because of the synergistic advertising that is used to advertise the magazine in the online version. Attitude Online - Thursday 14th March

The difference between the representations of men in the online and the print version of this magazine is that the online magazine shows men as being more buff which paints an unrealistic expectation of gay men to have these body types. Print cover has a gay man with a moustache which is an intertextual reference to Freddie Mercury. The print cover positions the audience as a gay man who has had problems with bullying from 'jocks' in the past. He is wearing a US Army Costume which may be used to appeal to an international audience. The femininity of the camp hand on hip gesture is a convention that is specific to the gay magazine genre. He is breaking the fourth wall with the direct mode of address with the look into the camera. It presents the gay male on the front as androgynous which he clearly isn't but this is a form of anchorage. Attitude online's primary purpose is to promote the magazine. It has a dedicated readership which may be influenced by the online version of the magazine. Camp - A deliberately tongue in cheek attitude to the world which reinforces a lot of gay stereotypes. Drag shows are very camp to appeal to a gay audience Diva is a gay magazine that is also aimed at women but it is less popular than Attitude. Attitude online is a hyper-sexualised representation of men - most images of these men are topless and often in provocative poses which is surprising in accordance to societal hegemonic norms. YouTube functions on a set of algorithms. Zoella uses algorithms by putting her name in the title when someone searches her channel. She also uses visually similar thumbnails. Same font, same facial expression. Easy to understand. Uses brand names to get views. Hashtags are a word or phrase preceded by a hash sign (#), used on social media websites and applications, especially Twitter, to identify messages on a specific topic. The handwritten serif font connotes innocence and that the videos are informal and girly. She always pulls the same facial expression to get more views.  The above examples of clickbait get the audience to click on the adverts based on algorithms that target them specifically based on a number of different things like ethnicity, age, gender and social status.
