Radio - Lesson 2

Middle Class Mode of Address

How sociohistorical (Historical Context) factors have led to a diversification (Presenting lots of different things) of media output?

Women now have more rights than they used to have meaning that they can freely broadcast more feminist views. All female panellists.

Diversification is the presenting lots of different things.

The 'home' episode is similar to the early showings of the original 'Women's Hour' due to mentioning of housework. However there are different viewpoints.

Late Night Women's Hour exists because the BBC has to put on a lot of different TV and Radio shows to essentially tick boxes for things that appeal to different target audiences.

How have digital platforms changed the way we consume radio?

- Mobile Radio
- Car Radio
- Online Radio Broadcast
- Radio TV Channels
- BBC iPlayer
- Console Radio
- Wind-Up Radio

Radio Broadcasts can be recorded and downloaded meaning that it can be listened to offline.

This is called Digital Convergence - The coming together of previously separate industries

Digital platforms have allowed any media to be more accessible. To access Late Night Women's Hour all you need to do is confirm that you have a TV license with the BBC.

It is still possible to listen to radio broadcasts. Older people may want to listen to analogue radio live rather than digital radio.

BBC iPlayer offers audiences an immersive experience.

Digital technology generally refers to anything that is a computer.

The UI of iPlayer's website includes thumbnails for even the radio broadcasts.

This particular showing of LNWH doesn't breach the regulation of OFCOM at all.

Regulation of TV and Radio (Film Maybe) is ineffective.

OFCOM requires local radio stations to provide an appropriate amount of local material and locally made programmes.

LNWH references IKEA in a negative way in some places in the broadcast. - Potential breach of OFCOM's guidelines.

'A popular online book store' refers to Amazon due to the impartiality of the BBC.

The show could be accused of sexism. The BBC has a remit to present a range of different TV shows/Broadcasts for a range of different audiences. It must give the audience an experience of plurality.

The BBC is a PBS - Public Service Broadcaster - Funded by the general public for the general public. The BBC is a 'public service' which is paid for by the tax payer in the UK.

BBC has a remit to inform, educate and entertain.

How does LNWH abide by OFCOM's regulatory framework?

Ensure a wide range of services and a wide appeal is available - Has an all female panel giving a female mode of address to the female target audience

Maintain plurality in broadcasting - The winter mug reference appeals to a female middle aged, middle class audience

Protect audiences from offensive or harmful material - Blocking a space for something that could be harmful or offensive.

Protect audiences against unfairness or infringement of privacy - Minor references to ex-husbands which are vague enough to not infringe on the privacy of a specific person.

Curran and Seaton argue that the media are controlled by a small number of companies driven by profit and power which completely disagrees with the remit of the BBC

Conglomeration is a form of horizontal integration in the example of Disney buying Marvel.

BBC was axed and then put onto YouTube.

IPC Published Woman magazine in 1964.

AC3:L was published by the major organisation Ubisoft.

The Times was published by News UK which is a subsidiary of NewsCorp owned by Rupert Murdoch. They also own The Sun which cold cause issues relating to bias of the producer.

Attitude Online - Wednesday 13th March

Attitude online's primary purpose is to promote the magazine. It has a dedicated readership which may be influenced by the online version of the magazine. Camp - A deliberately tongue in cheek attitude to the world which reinforces a lot of gay stereotypes. Drag shows are very camp to appeal to a gay audience Diva is a gay magazine that is also aimed at women but it is less popular than Attitude. Attitude online is a hyper-sexualised representation of men - most images of these men are topless and often in provocative poses which is surprising in accordance to societal hegemonic norms. An article is critical of lack of representation of different body types which isn't reinforced very well by the singular muscular representation of men which suggests that these images are only being used to make money as they know it plays on the potential desires of homosexual men. Articles are generally focused on grooming, fashion, celebrities and their appearance which suggest
