Newspaper Ideologies and Representation

Ideologies - Ideals and beliefs of the producer. They can be used to normalise the dominant ideas of the ruling class.  Often used to describe the way that those in power use their power to distort meaning.

Newsworthiness - How newsworthy a story is.

'If it bleeds, it leads' - If there is a death it will attract more people. It is the main story.

Tabloid - Red Masthead.

Intertextuality - Where a media product only makes sense through its reference to other media products.

Barthes also referred to the process of intertextuality as a referential code.

The use of black and white has dull connotations and could be a symbolic code to suggest that America is in trouble.

The use of the statue of liberty it's face cover has a satire effect.

The language that is used makes the smaller article seem quite extreme and shows an intertextual reference to an action/thriller film.

The statue of liberty symbolises liberty/freedom. The hands over the face makes reference to disaster and the image looks like a weeping angel which is similar to Doctor Who.

The red/black colour gives a sense of apocalypse. This has biblical links.

Culture jamming is often obsessed with the idea of destructing consumerism/capitalism. Culture jamming - the practise of criticising and subverting advertising and consumerism in the mass media, by methods such as producing advertisements parodying those of global brands. Adbusters potential genres: Pop Culture - Sans serif font has informal connotations Satirical Comedy - Attacks something. Adbusters uses a lot of negative white space which connotes purity but directly contrasts with the image shown on the background. Masthead changes every time. Attitude Online - Thursday 14th March

The difference between the representations of men in the online and the print version of this magazine is that the online magazine shows men as being more buff which paints an unrealistic expectation of gay men to have these body types. Print cover has a gay man with a moustache which is an intertextual reference to Freddie Mercury. The print cover positions the audience as a gay man who has had problems with bullying from 'jocks' in the past. He is wearing a US Army Costume which may be used to appeal to an international audience. The femininity of the camp hand on hip gesture is a convention that is specific to the gay magazine genre. He is breaking the fourth wall with the direct mode of address with the look into the camera. It presents the gay male on the front as androgynous which he clearly isn't but this is a form of anchorage. If somebody is a closet-gay then they can view the website so that they don't have to buy to magazine. It may be a way to reduce the...
